Herbert Roy Hudson, 85, of Windsor, Missouri, died Saturday, February 11, 2017, at Windsor Healthcare and Rehab Center, Windsor.
He was born on August 26, 1931, in Henry County, Mo., near Calhoun, Mo., the son of Fred Hudson and Mildred (Grau) Hudson. On December 23, 1952, at the Windsor United Methodist Church in Windsor, he married Bonnie Thacker, who preceded him in death on June 4, 2014.
Herb graduated from Calhoun High School in 1949 and enlisted in the Army, January of 1951. He went on to serve in the 2nd Division, 23rd Regiment Heavy Mortar Company during the Korean War and participated in the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge. He received the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. Eventually reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant, he was honorably discharged January 1954 at Camp Atterbury, Indiana.
Upon returning home, Herb worked at Payton Construction Company, setting poles for REA from Harrisonville, Mo., to south of Windsor. He then worked at the Thacker Skelly Service Station for 32 years. He was a member of the Windsor United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Windsor Fire Department for 24 years and spent 16 ½ years as Fire Chief.
Herb is survived by a son, Tim Hudson and his wife Edith, Green Ridge, Mo.; a grandson, Tyler Rex Hudson, also of Green Ridge, Mo.; two brothers, Ray Hudson (Erika), Versailles, Mo.; Russell Hudson (Judy), Calhoun, Mo.; one sister, Mary Ruth (Hudson) Embry and her husband Larry, Lake Saint Louis, Mo.; and a sister-in-law, Mary Christanson, Lawrence, Kansas; and several nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.
In addition to his wife, Herb was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Walter Hudson, Bill Hudson and a brother-in-law, Jim Christanson.
Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m., Friday, February 17, 2017, at Laurel Oak Cemetery, Windsor, Mo., with Rev. Kris Embry officiating. The family will receive friends before the service from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., at the Hadley Funeral Home, Windsor, Mo.
